Approximately 50 cars have been marked with what appears to be human bodily fluid in the Germany's municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, as reported by police.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they announced in a release.
Officers state they were notified during the night on Wednesday night, when a man observed that a automobile in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been covered with a red-colored fluid.
The substance had been placed in the pattern of a swastika, they added.
Law enforcement then found multiple other smeared vehicles and building exteriors in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are illegal in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi-era symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was likely blood from a person.
"Currently there is no clue as to its origin; investigators are currently not informed of any physical harm in connection with the event," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to solve the case" and have requested to the residents for details.
A high-ranking representative said the attack left him stunned and needed to be addressed promptly.
"This event strikes at the very heart of Hanau and revives the wounds of the extremist terrorist attack five years ago," he wrote on social media, mentioning the killing of nine victims by a shooter targeting individuals of migrant background in 2020.
