The Video Platform Grants Viewers Control to Limit Artificial Intelligence-Made Videos in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a updated setting that enables them to cut down on the quantity of AI-made videos appearing in their feeds. This initiative comes as the service announced that it currently hosts in excess of 1 bn AI-generated clips.

Trial and Implementation

The update is undergoing trials over the coming weeks before a widespread release. This advancement comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by recent video-generation tools.

The Broader AI Trend

Recent reports that almost 10% of the fastest-growing video streams on a popular video site only show content made by AI. A significant portion of this material is classified as “AI slop”, a term for substandard, mass-produced content that is often nonsensical or bizarre.

“We know from our community that many people like content produced via AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we want to give people the power to increase or decrease of that, according to their own likes,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The service announced that there are now over a billion videos on its app tagged as AI-generated. Overall, more than 100 m media items are uploaded to the app every day, making AI-generated material a limited percentage of its total content library.

User Control Features

Users will be able to decrease or raise the level of AI-generated videos they view by using the topic control option in the app and picking the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be modified under the setting include current affairs, style, aesthetics, and choreography.

AI Disclosure Rules

Its guidelines mandate users to identify convincing AI-generated content, and it bans harmful AI impersonations of public figures or critical incidents. Any realistic artificial content that is not labeled can be taken down under its user guidelines.

In addition, the app will now apply an AI-generated tag to content created with its own AI tools, or identified by an industry-wide initiative for recognizing content made by AI. This action is intended to stop users from trying to circumvent the tagging system.

Educational Initiatives

The platform is furthermore launching a $2 million educational fund for experts and organizations to produce educational content about responsible artificial intelligence. This project will support charitable organizations specializing in training computer science.

Content Safety Approach

The video-sharing app has justified its moderation strategy, amid discussion over intentions to lay off numerous review team members in the UK. It is set to cut 439 jobs in its user protection team in London, with worker representatives and internet security professionals voicing alarm that staff are being displaced by AI moderation.

A company official clarified that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but AI can shield workers by filtering out the most graphic content ahead of it has to be seen by staff. TikTok stated a significant reduction in disturbing and violent content seen by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its AI tools.

“We think that it’s essential to combine staff and AI to keep the platform safe,” the official commented. “We’ll have people as involved in the system, but we also think it’s extremely critical to minimize viewing of unsafe media as quickly as possible, which is where a significant AI assistance is proving valuable operate efficiently.”
