Student Society Future Leader Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Posts
The president-elect of the prestigious debating society has been removed from his position after losing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about Charlie Kirk.
The motion against George Abaraonye reached the required two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
Disputed Comments
The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on online platforms that seemed to welcome the killing of the American conservative figure, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an elongated version of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a messaging group with other members appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence was conducted over the recent days, with results announced on this week.
Official notices showed that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting removal, while 501 were against the motion.
The notice stated that the future president was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Proceedings were temporarily halted early on Monday after the returning officer was allegedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye asserted that the vote tally had been stopped because electoral officials believed "no valid outcome could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement unequivocally denied that any person appointed by the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Ongoing Dispute
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been submitted to the disciplinary committee and that he continued as president-elect.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of significantly more than half of university members" who voted to have a "safe election and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have said that any decision to keep him would "signal to the world that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the Oxford Union on a related program podcast.
The letter criticized the union of becoming a place where "student leaders openly applaud the killing of a ideological rival".
The statement warned that if the student were to remain in post, supporters would "directly reach out to every U.S. political figure who has ever spoken at the society and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had earlier criticized the student's comments after the activist's killing and stated that concerns filed against him had been referred for official review.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to discuss with the activist at the society in May.
