South American Rugby Union Triumphs Fuel Men's Global Tournament Qualification Campaign
While numerous fans in the UK concentrate on their clubs' early-season performances or discuss forthcoming fall test matches, the battle for World Cup 2027 qualifying continues unabated.
Chile's Historic Achievement
Chile earned their second consecutive spot at the tournament with a stunning playoff victory against Samoa recently, leaving one remaining spot to be claimed for the host nation by 2027. At the same time, Paraguay stunned Brazil 39-19 in the first leg of their qualifying series.
The second leg takes place on Saturday in Jacareí, near São Paulo, while Brazil's men's team attempts to emulate the women's achievement and secure qualification for the first time.
Forthcoming Qualifying Clash
Whether Paraguay manages a shock overall victory, or Brazil bounces back following manager Emiliano Caffera's recent dismissal, the lineup for November's qualifying event in Dubai will be confirmed. The Namibian team, Belgium, and the Samoan side are already confirmed their places for the Dubai-based competition from November 8th to 18th.
Global Qualifying Updates
Many other teams have also earned their places. The Hong Kong China team sealed first-time World Cup entry following beating Korea 70-22 in the summer, while the Zimbabwean squad will make a comeback to rugby union's most prestigious stage for the first time in over three decades by virtue of claiming victory in the African championship.
Chile's Growing Reputation
The knock-on effect of Chile's qualifying triumph ensures that Los Condores will face Italy for the first occasion next month during the autumn internationals, replacing Samoa who are obligated to compete in Dubai.
World Rugby's chief executive described Chile an "exciting and fast-emerging power" in announcing the upcoming match in the Italian city. As domestic the sport markets aim for larger crowds, rugby in Chile is thriving. A capacity crowd of over 20,000 saw the qualifying win in Viña del Mar, and manager Pablo Lemoine has guided the squad on an improving path since taking over in recent years.
Coach's Notable Career
The 50-year-old former Uruguayan prop has been making an impact for decades: recruited by Bristol in the late 90s, he memorably ran straight through the English defensive line to touch down at the 2003 global tournament.
His impact as head coach has been equally powerful: Chile have risen to 17th, their highest-ever ranking. During the last tournament in Europe, they were defeated in all matches, allowing 215 points and scoring 27, including a heavy defeat to the English team.
However, they proudly found the positive aspects, and after the 2027 draw in Sydney on 3 December, the coach can begin planning in earnest. They hosted the Scottish team previously, defeated by a significant margin in front of 24,000 supporters, and although they were beaten over two legs by the Uruguayan side in the initial qualifying round, they managed a narrow win on the road in Montevideo.
Samoa's Qualifying Challenge
Samoa, in contrast, have participated in all Rugby World Cup for decades, but are currently sitting in sixteenth position in the global rankings. They were winless in the recent regional tournament, resulting in qualifying disappointment against Chile, and the need to face nations such as Belgium adds additional challenge for the rugby-loving country.
Competition Structural Updates
Beyond specific teams' performances, it is important to consider how changed the expanded competition will look in 2027. For the first time, there will be a round of 16 with six groups of four rather than four pools of five. Pool-stage risk is significantly reduced because the top four third-placed teams will also advance.
Host Nation and Standings Consequences
The hosts, Australia, are currently ranked seventh in the world, which means they would miss out on top seeding and might meet one of South Africa, New Zealand, Ireland, France, the English, or Argentina in their group. They could rise into the top six during a busy November, though: England, the Italian side, Ireland, and France are their opponents, with a match against the Japanese team in Tokyo additionally scheduled for 25 October.
The Welsh team, on the other hand, are teetering in 12th, with Japan behind, and the implications of falling to 13th and into pot three are potentially significant.
Americas Presence and Future Tournaments
Another fresh aspect for 2027 is the presence of five teams from the Americas: the Argentine team, Uruguay, USA, Canada, and the Chilean squad – with Paraguay or Brazil potentially becoming the sixth. From World Rugby's perspective, American interest is beneficial, particularly with the 2031 World Cup set to be hosted by the United States, and the selection process for the 2035 edition was initiated recently.
Immediate Priority
First things first, however. The second installment of Brazil versus Paraguay sets up a four-way Dubai shootout, along with a potential standings change across the European nations in the coming month. No matter the outcome, Chile's successful qualification for a second consecutive World Cup has already made them as a resounding triumphant example.
