Online retailers including Shein, Temu, AliExpress and Wish are now being probed in the French Republic for the offence of allowing minors to view explicit material on their services, the French judicial authorities announced on this Tuesday.

The nation's regulatory body had reported the retailers to the legal authorities on Sunday after raising alarms about the marketing of youth-resembling adult toys on their online marketplace in recent days.

The investigative authorities explained that the platforms are being looked into over graphic, adult or “undignified” material that can be accessed by minors.

One of the platforms commented that it considers the situation with utmost gravity. Shein, Temu and Wish have also been reached out to for comment.

Broader Investigations and Company Responses

Two of the retailers are additionally under investigation over the dissemination of material involving children that are of a explicit nature, the office mentioned.

The issues have been handed over to a specialized police unit, the legal body explained. This unit is an section of the law enforcement that supervises the protection of young people.

AliExpress stated that the listings in dispute breached its rules and were removed once it learned of them.

"Merchants found to violate or trying to circumvent these standards will be sanctioned in compliance with our regulations," the platform declared in a statement.

On Monday, Shein announced it had prohibited the selling of any adult toys on its website globally. The based in Singapore firm also mentioned that it would terminate all merchant IDs associated with the prohibited sale of the minor-looking dolls and enforce stricter measures on its platform.

Agency Findings and Wider Context

The French consumer watchdog, the Directorate General for Competition, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control, had remarked that the sex dolls' description and grouping left "minimal uncertainty as to the illicit essence" of the items.

The examination of the platform occurs while the company, which was started in China, gets ready for the launch on this Wednesday of its inaugural fixed real-world store in France.

Protesters have been observed gathered in outside the Paris shop where the company is planned to establish the store.

The retailer plans to inaugurate shops in additional French shopping centers in cities including multiple French towns.
