England Scout for FIFA 2026 Bases Amidst Fears of Losing First-Choice Base to Holland.
England's football governing body has sent scouts to the United States this week to inspect potential bases for the forthcoming global finals, amid increasing apprehensions that their preferred site could be taken by the Holland.
Tournament Draw Complications Alter Preparations
Manager Thomas Tuchel had previously cleared an FA plan for England to locate in Kansas following a warm-up training period in Fort Lauderdale. However, following the recent group stage draw, there are now concerns that the Netherlands, who have their group games in Kansas, will be awarded priority on the desired facility at Sporting Kansas City—a state-of-the-art centre operated by US Soccer.
FIFA allocates training bases based on geography and FIFA rankings if there is competition, with the draw potentially pitting the FA against the Netherlands and Argentina for sites in the tournament's central region.
Considering Other Locations
Given England's group fixtures set to take place in Dallas, Boston, and New Jersey, the FA is now reportedly exploring alternative options on the US East Coast. The association started its search for training camps at the start of the year, with Tuchel and technical director John McDermott touring potential sites during the Club World Cup last summer.
Despite this advanced planning, there was always an acceptance that the official tournament draw could significantly alter their logistical arrangements.
Knockout Stage Travel Strategy
The Three Lions face the eighth most arduous group stage draw in terms of travel distance. Topping Group L would put England on track for a last-32 game in Atlanta, then a potential round of 16 tie in Mexico City.
- Significant Change: The FA may decide to travel from match to match for the knockout stages should England qualify, a significant shift from its standard practice of maintaining a fixed tournament base.
- Tournament Organizers Encouragement: FIFA is understood to be recommending such a itinerant approach for the expansive 2026 tournament.
Once the base camp is confirmed, the FA will focus on organizing two warm-up matches in Florida at the beginning of June.
