2026 Dubbed the Year of the Frog Game.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.
No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Considering a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are far from new to the world of games. Ever since the era of Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a cult following. However, their prevalence has noticeably exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam unveils an staggering number of results. Although, some of these are novelty titles, a sizable number are legitimate amphibian adventures.
Charting the Croak Comeback
To quantify this trend, I conducted a thorough analysis into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was admittedly subjective, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady rise from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's growing prominence in the broader culture is partially visible elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming seems especially pronounced.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Honestly, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have natural appealing traits for game developers.
- Charming Creatures: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that often become a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.
Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-grappling in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
What the Future Holds
So, what is the outlook for 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has even started—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the most significant year so far.
Should these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
